Meet Evan Reuben, a Young Comedian Looking to Make The World Laugh

Evan Reuben is a 21-year-old college student looking to make a name for himself in the world of comedy. Evan realized he wanted to become a comedian when he was fairly young, his childhood was described as rough and dark at times but he looked at comedians such as George Carlin to get him through those hard times.

Evan Rueben in the middle of his stand up performance.

“Just write everyday. Work harder than you think you can. It's a fun gig but it's a hard one as well. ”

Reuben's desire to become a comedian comes from the craving to pay it forward to others. Not knowing if becoming a comedian was the right decision he decided to follow his dreams. Reuben was a wrestler in high school and for the most part, comedy was just a hobby at the time but when Reuben and his coach got into a conflict he was kicked off the team. This only motivated Reuben further to become a comedian, he said “ I was terrified, but I knew it was now or never. I got into a comedy club that night and the rest is history.”

The first gig Reuben had the opportunity to perform at was at McGuire's comedy club in Bohemia. He had taken a comedy class and at the end, there was a graduation show where everyone was able to perform their material. A room packed with over 200 people. Reuben describes his first time performing as overwhelming and terrifying. English actor Edmund Kean once said, “Dying is easy, comedy is hard.”

“I was so nervous that I was getting stomach cramps and shaking like a leaf. I felt like I was going to vomit the whole time. I was having a series of panic attacks. My whole family came out to see me. I wanted to die. They called my name, I don't remember walking to the stage. The whole room went silent like it does in the movies, everything moved in slow motion. I picked up the microphone and it felt like taking a Xanax, everything just snapped into place and I felt relaxed, immediately. The set went incredible. I got lucky, honestly. Then, I went back out behind the comedy club and cried like a baby, It was the first time I was really good at something and I knew I was exactly where I was supposed be.” said Reuben.

Despite the struggle of finding the things that make people laugh, Rueben says he finds his material from everyday life experiences. He sits down and writes pages upon pages every day until a joke sticks and if it does, he’ll end up putting it in his act. The material he uses for his jokes strive from things that make him angry or frustrated and from there he turns into something people can laugh at.

The best advice Reuben has for someone starting off in stand up comedy is to just write every day, work as hard as you can towards your goal and just don’t give up. “It's an extremely hard gig but if you work hard at it you'll get good and you just might make someone laugh and if you don’t, shake it off, get better, have fun, then rinse and repeat.”

Evan Reuben has been working towards his goal to become a great comedian for up to four years now and has no plan on stopping. Eager to make as many people laugh, he plans on doing more gigs on Long Island once the school year is over. I lastly asked Reuben who by now has done his share of shows, how he reacts to a rough crowd when his stand up doesn’t go as planned and he says “ Sometimes it really sucks but it’s still better than having an office job.”
