Gaining a new perspective of Rock
Rock and grunge has reinvented itself in a new sub genre known as Indie music. Indie music has gained a wide audience over the years and with the help of streaming services such as soundcloud.com and bandcamp.com, it makes it easier for newer bands to upload their music and become better known. Some of these bands have been working hard towards their goal for years but have just now started gaining an audience. Bands such as Pity Party and The Red Pears who originate from California and growing rapidly making a name for themselves .
“Rock is reinventing itself in a way we can't even comprehend and I believe it's going in the right direction.” -Rich Olsen, Lead singer of The Suits
Pity Party
Pity Party Girls Club is a Punk Rock Grunge styled band that consist of 4 members but all songs are written by the lead singer Julian Amparo. Their first EP released in 2014 titled “TIRED” which consist of 5 songs. They are now on their 5th album, each ranging from 3-10 songs. They are based in Rancho Cucamonga, California and have just announced via there instagram that they are going on their first East Coast tour this upcoming summer. Their most popular song to date is “I hope Youre Doing Okay” which you can listen to on their album titled “Healing Process”.
Julia Riggs a Suffolk Community College student had this to say about the song “Peach Rings” by Pity Party Girls Club which released in 2017. “ The guy who was singing has a great voice and the instruments used in the song were incredible, I would definitely give them a listen when I get the chance to.”
The Red Pears
The Red Pears are a Indie-alt rock band based in El Monte, California, The band members consist of Henry Vargas (vocals/guitar), Juan Aguilar (bass), and Jose Corona who plays drums. They currently only have two albums, one titled “We Bring Anything to the Table... Except Tables We Can't Bring Tables to the Table” which was released in April, 2015 and the other titled “For Today, for Tomorrow, for What Is, for What Could've Been” which is their newest album releasing just this year in January, 2018.
I played Daylight/Moonlight which is The Red pears most favorable and known song by them to a student name Joseph Bellofatto and he had this to say about it, “It started off slow but then got really good but It's not something I would put on listening in the car, I'm more of a classic rock person and this is more newer rock.”
Beach Bums
Beach Bums are a psychedelic indie rock band from Los Angeles, California. There are 4 members that make up the band and they have been playing and working towards their goal since 2015. Their latest album titled The Goat pt. 1 is different from things they usually do. The rap album consist of 4 songs, “Daddy” being the most popular but their last Rock album was in 2017 titled “Everything”.
Beach Bums are more of a psychedelic rock and have a unique sound to them so when I played their most known song “Fah Q”, this is how Giavonna Rudilosso reacted to it. “ I can really vibe out to this, It made me feel like I was on a beach in California but the guys voice was ok I just really liked how it sounded but I most likely wouldn’t listen to it again.
The High Curbs
The High Curbs are from Inland Empire, California, the punk rock band started in 2013 and released their first album called “Marcelo Cleveland” released in 2016. The band currently has 5 members, Aaron Korbe, Andrew Palomino, Eduardo Moreno, Alberto Alvarenga and Spencer Cohen. Their newest Records are called “Empty Bottles” and “Want” which were both released in 2017.
Mike Agaliotis had this to say about The High Curbs latest release “Want” which came out in 2017 . “Who are these people again? Because they have such a familiar sound, it reminds me of a the band called wavves or Grouplove. Very fast toned but I like it I just need to give it another listen to maybe there other songs will interest me.”
Beach Fossils
Beach Fossils is a American Indie band formed in 2009 in Brooklyn, New York. The members consist of Dustin Payseur (Singer), Jack Doyle Smith (Bass) and Tommy Davidson (Guitar). They currently have 3 Studio albums, the newest one being Somersault which was released in June, 2017. Their most popular song is “Down the Line”
Beach Fossils are more of the softer tone bands out of all these bands and happen to be in the category known as shoegazing which is a sub-genre for indie music and alternative rock. The meaning behind shoegazing is that when you the artist plays the instrument they play while having their head in the direction of their shoe. I played “Down the Line” by them to Bryan Loaiza a Suffolk Student majoring in business and he said “ I really enjoyed the song and it made me feel like I was suppose to be at the beach which is probably why their name is Beach Fossils, i'm familiar with indie music but I really don’t listen to it a lot I mostly listen to rap but this is something I would give a listen to again.”
Punk, Indie, and grunge Rock are all sub-genres to the music genre known as Rock. Most of these bands are reinventing Rock and Roll in a new aspect and it seems to be thriving, gaining more followers by the day.
